“Ozone” the destroyed hero
Many people have probably heard or known about “ozone” before, but do you know how important ozone is to nature and the environment on our planet? Find out the answer in this article.
Ozone (O₃) is a gas made up of three oxygen atoms, which is very important in the Earth's atmosphere. Especially in the Stratosphere, which is the second layer next to the Troposphere. The layer of the atmosphere close to the earth.Ozone in the stratosphere is often referred to as ozone. “Upper ozone” or “D ozone” because of its role in protecting life on Earth from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
The upper layer of ozone serves as an important protective barrier for the planet. By absorbing UVB and UVC rays, which are rays that are harmful to living things. And it can cause health problems such as skin cancer, cataracts and immune suppression in humans. It can also destroy plant and animal cells. But tropospheric ozone, or terrestrial ozone closer to the earth, plays a different role. This is because ozone in this layer is caused by chemical reactions between air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).Under sunlight, ozone in the troposphere is a pollutant that affects human health and the environment. It causes breathing problems such as asthma and also affects plant growth.
Over the past several decades The ozone layer in the stratosphere has deteriorated. from man-made chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used in refrigerants and aerosols These chemicals, when released into the air, are carried higher into the atmosphere and break down under UV rays, creating free radicals that can destroy ozone molecules. This results in a hole in the ozone layer, known as the “ozone hole” at the South Pole.
